Q: Is ghusl compulsory on me if I see myself urinating in dream?

A. Ghusl will not be compulsory if a person sees himself urinating in a dream.

Q: If swimming in a public swimming pool, does ghusl become neccesary before performing salaah?

A. After swimming in a public pool, Ghusl will not be necessary before performing Salaah.

Masah of Beard

Q: When making whudu, when does one make masah of the beard and what is the correct way?

A. Wash the face thrice. Thereafter take a little water in the palm of the right hand. Rub this water in the beard below the chin. Thereafter push the fingers through the beard beginning from below the chin going outwards. (Note that this is called Khilaal and not Masah.)

The following words can be said when making Khilaal of the beard:

هٰكذّا اَمَرَنِىْ رَبِّىْ
HAAKADHAA AMARANEE RABBEE
(Piyaare Nabi Ki Piyaari Sunnatein P8)

An alternate method:
Without using fresh water, run the fingers through the beard with the palm of the right hand towards the throat

Incontinence and Wudhu

Q: When I am done with toilet, after sometime some drops come out of my private part. What can I do?

A. After finishing in the toilet, place tissue or toilet paper over the private part. After some time when the drops come out onto the tissue, go back to the toilet, remove the tissue and make Istinjaa.

One who suffers from doubts regarding dripping of urine should sprinkle water onto the clothing that touches the private part. So when he feels wetness he will tell himself that the wetness is the water he had thrown there. But one who has a definite problem of urine drops and is certain about it, should not sprinkle water, for this will not help to remove the doubts.

Trimming Hair Between Lower Lip and Chin

Q: Does the area directly below the bottom lip and above the chin constitute part of the sharia beard or can this be trimmed?

A. The area below the lip and above the chin is part of the jawbone upon which it is Waajib to grow the beard, hence it would not be correct to shave this part of the beard. (Fataawa Mahmoodiyah V19 P396). And Allah knows best.

Method of Masah of Ears

Q: What is the sunnah way of making masah of the ears in wudhu? Do the whole ears have to be made masah of? When I make wudhu I wipe every inch of the ears (such as the sides, earshell, etc), because I think if I leave a dry part it will not enough. Please tell exactly which parts of the ears must be made masah on, and which parts can stay without Masah.

A. Method of Masah of the ears: Make Masah of the ears after Masah of the head. Use the forefingers for the inside of the ears and the thumbs for the back of the ears. Start with the forefingers from the ear-holes and follow the curves till you reach the earlobes. Thereafter place the thumbs at the bottom of the ears in the back (behind the earlobes) and pull them towards the top of the ears. Then place the two small fingers in the ear-holes and shake them slightly. The Masah of the ears is complete. If per chance any portion of the ear was not covered in Masah, the Wudhu is still valid. (Al Bahrur Raa'iq V1 P27).

Extent of Impurity

Q: My clothes was napaak (ritually impure). I touched my clothes and my body was sweaty. I then touched another object and think that the sweat passed onto that object. Before I could clean that object, somebody else touched this object. And they touched this object with sweathy/wet hands becuase they came out of the bathroom.

How far does the najis (impurity) go. The clothes, my hands, and the object are now cleaned, but that person is going everywhere touching things, washing his hands, etc. Is the najaasat continuing?

A. Your hands did not become Naapaak, nor the object that you touched afterwards. The other person's hands also did not become Naapaak. There is no need to delve into matters of cleanliness and impurity with a fine-tooth comb. Shari'ah has made it easy. A moist or sweaty hand does not contract impurity from impure garments unless the hand comes into direct contact with Najaasat.

Semen Discharge after Bath

Q: After doing Ghusl (bath) from intercourse, the husband's sperm still emerges from the wife's vagina and continues to come out for days. Can the wife say her prayers? What should the wife do, should she wait and perform Ghusl after 5 days? Is she still impure during those 3 to 5 days?

A: She will make Ghusl after intercourse and say her prayers. If anything emerges thereafter, she will wash the area and remove the soiled clothing, make Wudhu and perform Salaah. She will not repeat the Ghusl.

If semen leaks out from the wife’s vagina after she had sexual relations with the husband and had made Ghusl, and she is certain that it is the husband’s semen then she does not need to make Ghusl again. If after sexual intercourse the wife had slept or passed urine or walked for about 40 paces, and upon finishing her bath she noticed her own semen leaking out, then too, she does not need to make Ghusl over again. In both cases she must simply wash her private part and make a fresh Wudhu.

Dripping Urine Problem

Q: I suffer from a problem.When I pass urine, at the end of that few drops get left in the private part and after some minutes they comes out in the pants. So when I am in my office how can I change my clothes and rebath? I tried so many things like after passing urine wait for the left drops but every thing has failed. What does Islam advise? I miss my daily prayers due to this reason.

A. After passing urine do not make Istinjaa immediately. Place some tissue or toilet paper over the private part and leave the toilet. The tissue will prevent the drops from going onto the clothes. Later after the drops come out onto the tissue, go back to the toilet, remove the tissue and make Istinjaa.

Shaving and No Pubic Hair

Q: If there is no or very little hair on pubic areas is shaving still compulsory?

A: If there is no hair, there will be no need to shave. If there is little hair and it has lengthened, it will be necessary to shave it. It is necessary to shave at least once every 40 days. So if the hair was left for 40 days, then regardless of how short it is, one must shave. Not to do so is sinful.

Q: Is it ok to make the duas for/during wudu in your heart while in the toilet?

A: When making Wudhu in a combined bathroom and toilet, one should not read the Du'aas of Wudhu loudly. Instead these should be read in the mind.

Discharge and Bath

Q: Whenever I think about my wife while speaking, something gets discharged from my front private part? What is that? Do I need to ghusl (have a bath)?

A: If the discharge is a transparent sticky liquid, it is called Mazi. Discharge of Mazi breaks Wudhu and makes the clothes Najis but does not break Ghusl. Wash the area and remove and wash or change the soiled clothing.

Tayammum for Ghusl

Q: Is it correct that when no water is available and a person is in a state of janabat (needs a compulsory Ghusl/bath), he may perform tayamum? If so, when water does become available, does such a person then have to perform ghusl or will he be considered paak (clean)?

A: Yes he should make tayammum.However when sufficient water becomes available then his tayammum will break and he has to make ghusl.

Q: Could you please define the area of pubic hair that needs to be removed?

A: The area below the navel and the area around both genitals, front and hind.

A: One can hold the cellphone without Wudhu but should not touch the screen when the Quraanic verses appear on it.

Bathing Naked

Q: Can I perform Ghusl naked in Bathroom? Do I need to cover the naval to below the private parts during Ghusl?

A: It is not necessary to cover the area between the navel and the knee during Ghusl if one cannot be seen by others. It is a higher level of modesty to cover this area even if one cannot be seen by others.

Q: Can husband and wife take a bath together?

A: It is permissible for the husband and wife to bath together. Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi wa Sallam) also bathed with his wife. (Saheeh Muslim V1 P176)

Water Coming Out After Ghusl

Q: After performing ghusl sometimes water comes out of my penis. It's very annoying because even though I do the ghusl a second time water still comes out. Do I hve to do ghusl again? What if blood comes out?

A: You do not have to repeat the Ghusl. If anything does come out, whether water or blood, Wudhu will break and not the Ghusl.
